Cocktails, castles and board games| Cardiff 2019

Hi everyone,

In April we decided to spend our Easter weekend in Cardiff, in search of some sunshine and a bit of peace and quiet. Although it wasn’t quiet – it was the Bank Holiday after all – it was definitely a refreshing change from the congested London that we’re used to.

As soon as we got to Cardiff, the very first thing we did was venture into town with our suitcases for some brunch (this is where the cocktails come in). Here’s our little Revolucion De Cuba feast…

Avocado Brunch. With artisan sourdough toast topped with homemade guacamole, mango salsa and diced plum tomato, with a drizzle of olive oil and cracked black pepper.

Crispy Fried Courgette. Lightly fried in our signature Mojito batter, served with Cuban gremolata.

Cocktailsssssssss. We ended up going sharing a frozen strawberry daiquiri and a strawberry mojito.

Cubano Benedict. Toasted sourdough with a light zingy mustard spread, topped with pulled pork, a poached egg, hollandaise sauce and sweet smoky paprika.

The only thing we did more than eating whilst we were in Cardiff was actually walking. The only time we took the bus was when we were travelling from our hotel, into central Cardiff and back again. We did get a waterbus one time too.

Speaking of the waterbus… We took a boat down to Caridff Bay from Cardiff Central. I think it only took about 15 minutes – the wait to get on the boat was actually longer than the journey. The bus stop was in Bute Park, a huge green space by the river with plenty of flowers and picnic spots.

As soon as we got off the boat we got a couple of smoothies from a cafe on the pier and did a little exploring and picture-taking. It was at least 25 degrees on that day so we made our excuses and shared a Mr Whippy too.

There was a lot of restaurants and cafes to choose from but we weren’t actually hungry when we went to the bay so we ended up eating later on when we walked back to central.

We made an effort to go back to Bute Park when we had a bit of free time to take a break from tourist-ing. We put together a little picnic – bread, fruit, iced tea etc etc – and found a quiet bench by the river. It was super busy with it being the Bank Holiday but we managed to find a fairly quiet spot.

Bute Park is right next to Cardiff Castle so we popped in to say hello on our way.

There was quite a good gap between the water and where we were sitting which means that was a decent distance between me and the ducks (I’m petrified of ducks).

One of our more relaxed adventures took us to a games cafe. Chace & Counters is tucked between the shops and restaurants on the main high street in central Cardiff. We mostly played the classics: Scrabble, Connect 4, KerPlunk and a few others.

It only cost ยฃ5 per person to play games. It was definitely worth it because it kept us entertained for a good few hours. We also ate some falafel, hummus and chicken from their cafe too.

They have over 500 games on their bookshelf so we’d have to go back there a few more times if we ever plan on playing them all.

FYI I gave all my tips to David Attenborough (sorry not sorry).

It was the first time I’d ever played Scrabble and I won which pretty much made my weekend.

As always, thank you for reading!

Let me know if you’ve ever been to Cardiff and what you thought of it too.
