Hello again,
In the past I’ve written posts about how to save money as a student and how to budget. People seemed to find these really useful, so, here is another!
Despite having a job while I study, I try and make the most of my money and make it last for as long as possible. Sometimes the best way to save money is taking advantage of apps and websites that literally exist to make things cheaper for you. So,ย here are some of the ways that you can save yourself a bit of money…
1. Get a railcard! I have a 16-25 railcard and it saves me so much money when I need to buy train tickets home. A lot of people don’t know that you can add your railcard to your Oyster card too. If you live in London you’ll know that the tube doesn’t come cheap. If you get yourself a railcard then you’ll have a discount for a whole year.
2. Treat yourself without bankrupting yourself. You shouldn’t stop having fun just because you’re scared of running out of money. By choosing restaurants that are within your budgetย you’ll get a lot more for your money. Some restaurants even offerย student discount!
3. FatFingers. This isn’t something I’d thought about before but if you use eBay regularly, it’s definitely worth having a look. It’s basically a site that shows you items that are listed on eBay with spelling mistakes, which means no one is finding these items or bidding on them. You might find something you’ve been looking for and you could pay a lot less for it – all because of a spelling mistake.
4. ย Take advantage of special offers. Invested in something like a TasteCard or Cineworld Unlimited, you can eat more food and watch more films for your money.
5. Think carefully about where you and your friends are going for a drink. There are so many pubs and bars in London that are actually affordable, Sam Smiths pubs for example.
6. Set yourself a budget for the day and stick to it. When you go out for the day in London it’s too easy to spend money. If you follow @SkintLondon on Twitter you’ll find so many things to do for under ยฃ10. If you live in London, you’ll know that a day out for ยฃ10 is a very reasonable price.
7. When it comes to buying your tickets home, check TicketClever. You might find that you can get your tickets cheaper this way. There’s a lot more information on their website but I will tell you that they have an “average customer saving of 58%” which is amazing seeing as train ticket prices in this country are extortionate.
8. If you haven’t used the check-in feature on Facebook, it might be time to start. The Drinki app will tell you where you can get free drinks for just checking into a venue on your Facebook status.
9. London has the best charity shops. So, if your taste is expensive and your budget is limited, you might want to consider having a root through some of the charity shops near you.
10. SpareRoom is something that a lot of you have probably already heard about. If you’re looking for a room to rent or if you have a spare room you want to fill, you might find that SpareRoom is the answer.
As always, thanks for reading!
